Tonka Bean
Tonka bean is the seed of the Dipteryx odorata tree, native to South America. Its dominant odorant is coumarin, which smells of sweet almonds, cut hay, and warm tobacco. Tonka is the note that gives masculine 'barbershop' fragrances their warm, rounded dry-down — it's in Bleu de Chanel, Dior Sauvage, and La Nuit de L'Homme, and it's the reason those fragrances don't turn sharp as they fade.
Scent Profile
Sweet, almondy, hay-like, slightly tobacco-like
Typical Use
Base note in masculine fougères, orientals, and tobacco compositions; rounds out sharp dry-downs.
