Lavender
Lavender (specifically Lavandula angustifolia, or 'fine lavender') is the defining top note of the fougère family and the most important aromatic in masculine perfumery. It's herbal and clean rather than floral, with a camphoraceous edge that pairs perfectly with bergamot, coumarin, and oakmoss. Lavender from Provence (high-altitude) is the benchmark; lavandin (a hybrid) is sharper and cheaper and used in functional perfumery.
