Amber
'Amber' in perfumery is not ambergris (whale secretion) and not fossilized tree resin — it's a composite accord built from labdanum (a sticky cistus resin), benzoin (a vanilla-like balsam), and vanilla, often with styrax and opoponax. The result is warm, golden, slightly sweet, and deeply sensual. Amber is the base of the entire 'oriental' fragrance family and the reason so many evening fragrances feel 'cozy.'
Scent Profile
Warm, resinous, balsamic, sweet, slightly powdery
Typical Use
Base note in orientals, gourmands, and evening fragrances; fixes and sweetens heavier compositions.
