Patchouli
Patchouli is a bushy herb whose leaves are fermented and steam-distilled for an oil that smells of damp earth, dark woods, and a faint camphoraceous mint. It's the base note of the entire chypre family and a fixture of orientals. Modern perfumery often uses 'clear' or 'heart' patchouli (a distilled fraction) to keep the earth without the mustiness. Raw patchouli is polarizing: lovers smell depth, haters smell a damp basement.
