Guaiac Wood
Guaiac wood (Bulnesia sarmientoi, also spelled guaiacwood or guayacan) is steam-distilled from the heartwood of a South American tree. The oil smells of soft smoke, rose, and a faint tea-leaf sweetness — it's the 'rosy smoke' note behind many leather and rose compositions. Guaiac wood is also a mild natural source of guaiol, which gives it a 'soft' woody character distinct from cedar's dryness or sandalwood's creaminess. It's in Le Labo Rose 31, Tom Ford Oud Wood, and many masculine 'smoky woods.'
