Jean-Claude Ellena

French · b. 1947

Signature

Minimal, transparent, and built around a single dominant accord.

Jean-Claude Ellena was the in-house perfumer at Hermès from 2004 to 2016 and is widely considered the most influential perfumer of his generation. His philosophy — 'less is more,' a composition should say one thing clearly — produced Terre d'Hermès, Un Jardin sur le Nil, and the entire Hermessence line. He reduced the typical Hermès formula from 60+ materials to under 30 and proved that transparency and longevity are not mutually exclusive.
